( www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=69369861 ) Always on time, Shoshana was more than ready to begin this study session with her friend and "worst enemy", Derek Mathaw. She had her notebook opened in front of her and books stacked in a neat pile. Why Derek was her worst enemy? Well, we shouldn't go into such extremes. However, she only really thought of him in such manner because he was a threat. His cockiness and arrogance startled her. No one had such pride, no one, because she had enough to share. Not that she would actually become generous enough to share any of her pride nor her successes. Shana felt the need to make it clear that the only one great among the two was her. She was, after all, chess champion. What other girl with her looks and enchantments could ever be quick and mentally prepared enough to be such a chess wiz? In her mind, of course, she was the absolute. Still, Derek was more or so one of her many weaknesses. Which maybe was the reason why he irked her so, yet, she found his company pleasing. Complicated. The fact that he was a few years her elder made it the even more exciting. Shoshana was always more interested in the older males. They were wise and had more wit than any of these sophomore prudes. Shana proved that she was well beyond her age by how she presented herself. Her fashion sense was, at least for her taste, excellent. Sophisticated and above all comfortable. Becoming a little bit impatient, Shoshana glanced around the library. Her doe like eyes were on the entrance but soon she felt as if she was appearing desperate and averted them back down to the writings on her notebook. Acting cool and collected as if she had just casually been glancing toward the library doors.

It was a weekend after all, and his more presentable clothing choices were in the wash. Walking down the hall to the library in rumpled khakis and a blue t-shirt, he felt comfortable and at ease. He even had a blue bandanna hanging out of his pocket and his signature leather-string bracelet on his right arm. Grinning, he spotted Soshana sitting at a table, notebook out. She had been glancing towards the doors - no doubt looking for him - when he entered. Giving her a wave and grin, the arrogance set in. He liked Shoshana, she was a good friend and great intellect - definitely a challenge to hang out with, which was why he liked her so much. To him, there was nothing complicated about their relationship - just two friends who got on each others nerves, on occasion. "Hey," he greeted, sliding into a chair opposite her. "I like your outfit today," he said, using the excuse to slide his gaze from her eyes, down in a general assessment of her physical appearance. "It's a good color on you," he appraised, flashing a cheeky smile. He did it just to get a reaction - but, also because he thought she looked nice. But he couldn't just tell her that flat out - no, there needed to be some sort of teasing to start the day off right. "So, what subjects do you need my help in today?" Of course he wasn't tutoring her - they were studying together. He just liked feeling superior.

If Shana had known that Derek had spotted that gaze, she would have mentally cursed herself. However, she had no clue and was completely oblivious to the matter. Which was why she greeted him rather coolly but politely, "Hello, Mathaw." she waved her hand once but very slowly. She was playful when it came to interacting. Almost mockingly, of course.
She sat there still and quiet when she saw his eyes wander to her outfit. At the moment, she didn't think much of it. "Yes, yes, I feel a little spunky orange today." she moved her head side to side before grinning, satisfied that Derek had in fact complimented her. He just might not have wanted to accept it. She rose her eyebrow with that thought circling in her head as she looked down to her notebook.
Suddenly the expression on Shana's face changed to that of an appalled look. Had- Had Derek just implied that- Oh no, that just wont do. "Alzheimer's so soon?" Shana laughed before clicking her tongue and then looking to her textbook. "If you have no memory of what we're here for... Here..." she grabbed her stack of social studies books and let them fall before Derek. They slammed rather loudly on the table.
"Are you Carnegie or Rockefeller?" Shana asked him as he looked to him and rested her elbows on the table with her hands clasped together.

Derek snorted. "Spunky orange?" He scoffed, picturing an orange covered in spikes with a mohawk. That was just what came to mind, and he laughed for a moment. Perhaps it sounded like he was laughing at her, but it was just that he was laughing at the concept of a spunky orange. In his sort of immature mind, he thought it was funny.
Raising an eyebrow at the Alzheimer's comment, he replied, "Alzheimer's is no joke, my dear Shana. Respect the elderly, and all that," He hadn't a better come-back than reprimanding her. Typically, she had the 'zinging' sarcastic comments, and he had the snarky remarks. They never got into arguments that required insults, and therefore Derek had no need for a come-back, ever. Wincing as she slammed the books on the table, he made a mental note never to get her riled up while she had heavy textbooks at hand. "Shh!" he put a finger to his lips and smiled. "Someone's got a bit of an attitude today, hmm?"
When it came to her question, his stomach dropped the slightest. So he needed a study session for a reason - he had only a faint idea what Rockefeller and Carnegie were. "I suppose I really do need to study," he sighed. "I'm also supposing this Carnegie wasn't the founder of Carnegie hall? Or am I on some sort of right path?" He chuckled, looked down at the books she had plopped in front of him, and opened one up. "Ah, I see... rich people. Right up my ally."

Spunky Orange was only a joke Shana had made up in her head. It was from this movie she had seen where cashmere sweaters had these ridiculous names but clearly, it was only an inside joke. She bit the inside of her cheek and puckered her lightly glossed lips as she did so. It was one of her many quirks but it was done on purpose. Shana felt it gave her a bit of a flirtatious, baby doll look that only she enjoyed having.
A gasp escaped her when Derek took her Alzheimer's joke as that of offensive. However, she knew very well what Mr. Mathaw was doing. Shana laughed very quietly when he hushed her. "Oh paw! It was an accident... They slipped from my fingers. It was only your fault that you didn't take them." she said with a stifled giggle.
Watching Derek rack his brain in such manner amused Shana. She smiled victoriously before shaking her head. "No shame, no shame." she assured him. "Just let Master Shoshana guide you through these folks." she chimed generously before reaching her arms up and taking a book. It was the American History book.
"Carnegie Hall may have, perhaps, been named in honour of Andrew Carnegie. However, the Carnegie we're talking about was the owner of a steel company. This huge technological genius." she explained to him of what she remembered at the top of her head as she found the correct page where it explained in further detail the life of this man. "As for Rockefeller, he was an oil kind of dude. He was the owner of a Standard Oil Company - they were both really rich, intelligent guys." she nodded before looking to him.
"I got dibs on Carnegie." Shoshana winked before placing her hand upon the page so Derek could read up on the men. "Seriously, Derek, you have to try a little more." she teased, although it sounded like a challenge.

Master Shoshana? He just shook his head in a mixture of disbelief... and awe. Shana really knew what she was talking about when it came to history. It kind of came naturally to her. Derek, though, he was the writer, not so much the reader. Sure he could remember formulas and calculate sums and do practically anything scientific or mathematic, but he just couldn't get into remember dates or people's histories if they didn't have anything to do with something he found relevant. For instance, he could recite any fact about Edgar Allan Poe, or tell you about Marie Curie's entire life from start to end. But Rockefeller? Who even cared? Not Derek, that was for sure.
Looking down at the page she had pulled up, he groaned. The words were already swimming in front of his eyes. When he studied alone, he tried spicing things up - giving himself a break after every three paragraphs, or writing creative summaries after every chapter, just to make it easier. But he couldn't let Shana in on the fact that he couldn't make it through a few pages of simple history. So, he put his elbow on the table and leaned his chin on his fist, skimming through the first few paragraphs as he wrote down the important information on both Rockefeller and Carnegie.
After about ten minutes, he started looking up. As Shana worked on her own thing, he couldn't help but wonder what was going through her head. She looked so concentrated, poised and perfect in her 'spunky orange' outfit, lips glossed and -- wait, focus, focus. He just couldn't keep his mind in one place, and not knowing what was going through her mind bugged him. "Um, Master Shana?" he said, a little mockery in his tone of voice. "Teach me the ways of getting out of here. This is terribly boring and, no offence, but I could teach way better than you are." He teased, as if challenging her.

Despite that Shoshana was indeed not American, she was interested in the history of the United States. It interested her because it was so put together, something about was very genuine and authentic. Still, very complicated and full of secrets. History class was like travel through time for young Shana and she enjoyed every minute of it. Not that history was her only hobby because she was a lady of many interests.
While doing her own thing, she couldn't help but to give Derek a glance every once in a while. Shana pretended to not take notice to his own glances to her. It made her slightly uneasy, she shifted in her seat before flipping the book's page. After jotting down all her notes, Shana stretched slightly while raising her hands up and groaning quietly. She fixed the collar of her polka dotted blouse before looking to Derek after a long time.
"The ways of getting out of here?" Shoshana rose an eyebrow and widened her eyes. She looked down to the books scattered on the table as her face changed to that of a thoughtful one. Almost instantly, she snapped her finger and said, "Ah-ha, how about we get out of here. It's the most practical suggestion." she said, her Welsh accent became heavy. She began to gather her notebook and books up inside of her bag. She then rose an eyebrow and laughed ironically, "My ass you could. If it hadn't been for me, you would have never known who Carnegie or Rockefeller were." she snapped after standing up, she rested her hands against the table and leaned forward to him.

Standing up as well, he flipped his books closed and leaned across the table, too. Raising an eyebrow, he smirked. "I would have found out who they were if I read the chapter anyway. Teaching is different than telling me what to read," he informed her, trying his hardest to sound pretentious and snotty. He was so close to her, he could admire the slant of her eyebrows and flashing eyes. She was definitely annoyed by him - and he loved it. Gleefully, he smiled and stood up, packing his bag with his supplies slowly. "It doesn't matter how well you teach, anyway," he commented. "I just want to leave. You wanna go somewhere?"

When Derek moved in close, Shana did her best to keep completely cool — in both ways. Her facial expression and the temperature of her face. Although there did come about a light pink tint on the apples of her cheeks. It could have just been her blush but only she knew it wasn't. She pursed her lips together while standing up and looking up to Derek's face.
"You're just mad because you were confused. Calm down, kiddo. It's perfectly understandable." Although Shana did find it rather sad that he didn't find interest in the history of his own country. It after tied together what is happening today but to each his own.
When Derek suggested that they'd do something, Shana's face suddenly glowed. Was he asking her out on a date? Oh, but of course not! He had just stated that he was bored and was probably using her for his own enjoyment. Well, it didn't bother her. "What do you suggest?" she asked him before beginning to lead the way out of the library.
"What do you do for fun, anyways?" Shana asked curiously, concerning that they never hung out outside of school. "Or I mean what boring things do you do that you consider fun." she laughed.

Derek snorted when she called him kiddo - how cute, she thought she was a superior to him. Shaking his head in silent laughter, he just followed her out of the library. He made sure to remember her blush, however - she had been blushing when he leaned in close! He was definitely getting to her. He didn't know exactly how he felt for Shana... there came to mind the old saying that when a boy picks on you, he likes you. Maybe he did, but he wouldn't admit it to himself - or to her. He just liked teasing, and it was all supposed to be fun and games, no feelings involved - definitely not yet.
As they walked through the double doors of the library and down the hall, he stopped at a vending machine and grabbed a bottle Coca Cola. Offering her a dollar, he smiled. "You want something? It's on me, after that wonderful study session we had. I figure I owe you," he winked, but even though he looked like it was nothing, he was hoping she'd accept the money. He liked buying gifts or spending money on his friends, it made him feel like they appreciated something he did for them. Opening his bottle of soda, he took a few swigs and sighed, it was cool and refreshing. "What do I do for fun?" he chuckled.
"Well," he said, leaning against the wall, trying to look cool. "Most of my time is spent with the ladies. I'm a partying type of guy, I'm sure you know that. Aside from having the generic teenage fun... mmm, I play lacrosse." He mimed holding a lacrosse stick and tossing the ball. "Sportsy, good looking, great with the ladies - I'm pretty awesome," he boasted, giving her another wink, this one a little more suggestive. All fun and games... right?
