The last thing that Addie expected in the world was Kye to kiss her despite the fact that he had asked if he could kiss her before. She assumed that he was just asking that to throw her off of her confidence but apparently he wasn't thinking that way. Did this mean that he liked her? Kylar Fox like her? She didn't think of him as the emotionless freak that so many people seemed to think of him as but she certainly didn't see him as the touchy feel-y kiss giving type either especially to girls that he may or may not even have feelings for. She'd never heard much about him having a large sexual history so she felt safe in assuming that he wasn't out to just get her vagina and leave her hurt somewhere even more so now that he knew her history and why exactly she was such a prude about the more sexual things. It wasn't just because she wanted to be an annoying little pesky girl who didn't satisfy guys around her.
She tried to keep her cool when she felt him reach for her hand. Oh.. they were doing this! Could he tell that she was extremely nervous? His simple touch made her heart race and she got these annoying but somehow amazing butterflies in her stomach. It wasn't uncomfortable, it just felt very right. She wasn't going to complain about it! "I just hope that we don't run into some wildlife and get ate by like a bear or something." She was mostly kidding around about that but then she realized that there was a real possibility that they could be eaten alive by some wild animal and decided that maybe she shouldn't make any jokes about that. Karma could be a bitch sometimes and she didn't want to piss it off.
She felt almost empty when he released her hand and started climbing up the tree. What was she supposed to do now? She had a small major fear of heights so she didn't know if she should really attempt to climb up it but she wanted to share the view with Kye though and that motivated her to at least give it a try. "You are most definitely a monkey, Kye.. I mean.. I kind of feel like I should give you a banana or something." She still hadn't quite figured out how the hell that he had managed to get up there or even how he was going to manage to get back down. She trusted that he had some kind of a plan and carefully started to use her small amount of body strength to get herself up there.
"If I fall and die then I'm going to haunt you forever.." She paused before adding, "I feel like you would enjoy that though." She didn't even know how that she did it but she slowly got herself up to his level. "You were right though.. The view up here is nice." She was just going to pretend that she wasn't gripping onto him for dear life.. Hopefully he wouldn't notice.

Kye chuckled to himself at Addie's comment. "You know me so well." He said, smiling as he watched her climb up. He offered her his hand to help pull her the rest of the way and could tell she was far out of her comfort zone up here. That was good for her though. He liked pushing her past her limits because it was only beneficial to her. He thought it was a good way that she could overcome her fears yet he wouldn't do anything that she was too uncomfortable with.
Once she was on his level, he wrapped his arm around her to steady her balance and make her feel safer. He didn't mind her clinging to him and the idea made him feel warm inside because he felt needed. It was stronger than the feeling he got from Gabe, his little cousin. He kind of wished that he was here too because he loved to do everything that Kye did. The two were more like close brothers rather than cousins and Kye knew he had to be careful because Gabe was always watching. Kye was his role model. Gabe always got upset when Kye would sneak out but promised not to tell. The previous night, he actually started to cry when he asked him not to leave that night. Obligated, Kye assured him that he was going to be back soon and left anyways despite the little boy's desperate plea.
That was one thing he hadn't told Addie about even though she was his best friend. He didn't think she should know and knowing would only complicate things. What if she thought differently of him if she knew? That, I think, was his biggest fear. He didn't want anything to change between them, especially now that he was starting to develop weird, new feelings that he'd never really felt before. He wasn't really wanting to tell her that either, but she could probably tell with his slight change of heart. Kye went from stone cold emotionless to 'I can't stop staring because you amaze me and you make me feel.' He was kind of scared to feel this way.
"I used to climb tall trees like this when I was little.." Kye stared, staring out at the overview of the forest. From where they were, you could see for miles. "My mom taught me. She liked doing weird things like that. We used to climb apple trees in the summer and pick all the ripe ones we could find and take them home so Dad would make his famous apple pie. God, that shit was the best." Kye felt kind of sad talking about her.. He missed her and the things that they used to do. He missed how selfless and beautiful she was and in a lot of ways, Addie reminded him of her. "I can try to make it for you sometime.." He offered, trying to distract himself from feeling.

Addie would have to be an idiot to not notice the differences in her best friend's behavior towards her lately. She didn't comment because she knew that she had been definitely acting more affectionate with him. Had he met someone who brought him out of his emotionless little bubble? Or was he simply responding to her new more touchy feel-y ways? She honestly hoped that he had met a normal lovely girl to bring him out of himself. She knew that it would hurt to see him with someone else and she'd end up crying into her pillow every night for awhile but he was worth it. He was worth the heartbreak that she knew that she would experience as long as he could tell her that he was happy or at least as long as she could see some kind of genuine smile on his face.
She was taking so much more from their friendship than she knew that she could ever return to him. He was slowly teaching her how to brave and she didn't even know if he realized that he was doing it. It seemed mean at first when he suggested that they sleep on the spot where the most horrible thing in her life had happened to her but now she was starting to see that it might be for the best like climbing this tree. He could have allowed her to sit in her comfortable little bubble for the rest of her life but instead he got her up here and now she was experiencing something that she never expected. She wasn't lying when she said that she loved the view from up here but she wasn't talking about the surrounding area.
She was starting to wonder if he even knew how gorgeous that he was especially from this angle. She knew that she should look away but she just couldn't bring herself to. She was breathless just thinking about that kiss with him and her knees felt like jelly which made her cling just a little tighter to his body. Why was he so relaxed about her doing this? He didn't seem like the type of person who would welcome such physical contact especially with the dependent vibe that she knew that she was giving off right now. She couldn't help but feel like maybe this was what it felt like when you were falling in love for the very first time. She'd never experienced something so frighteningly amazing before in her life. She still couldn't tell if he made her want to skip around or throw up.. Maybe a little of both.
Her interest was perked when he mentioned that he used to do this when he was little. She'd grown up in a trailer park without very many trees to climb so she'd never experienced that. She could imagine him as a little boy climbing up trees though and it made her heart flutter. He was probably an adorable child, too. "I would really like that, Kye." She didn't notice right away but it clicked it her head all of the sudden. He used past tense when speaking of the pie.. Was it not the best anymore or had something happened to his father? She moved a hand to squeeze his knee as she tried to think of a way to assure him that he could tell her anything. "You never really mention your parents.. I don't want to pry or anything but I just want you to know that you can tell me anything that you have on your mind."

Kye had long since trailed off in thought. The reason he never talked about his parents was one.. because they were dead, and two.. it made him feel. He'd built up such a thick wall to numb himself to the inevitable guilt that he'd been the cause of both of their passings. The previous gaze that he had when looking out at all of the seemingly untouched land had turned into a blank slate as he dropped his eyes. It hurt to even think about talking about his parents but maybe, if she really wanted to know, he didn't have to tell her exactly what happened. For a second, he even thought about lying and saying that they lived back in Boston and he'd moved here by choice just because.
As good of a fabricator that he was, he couldn't do that to Addie. She trusted him enough to share probably to most intimate secret that she had with him and here he was seriously considering not telling her the truth. Maybe he didn't have to lie, but didn't have to give the details. Parents die all the time, who's to say they weren't killed in a car accident or maybe went on a cruise and their boat sank or they died in a plane crash? Shit like that happened, didn't it? Kye hadn't realized how long it had been and he still hadn't answered her. "Oh.."
He subtly ran his thumb across the bark of the tree and decided that he no longer wanted to be in it. It was time to climb down now that he was feeling the sting in his chest. Step by step, he helped get her down as well as himself and when they reached the bottom, he ran his coat sleeve across his face and sniffled quietly, trying not to let her know. He cleared his throat and finally spoke, his voice was flat. "They died a while back." How the fuck was he supposed to explain it without scaring her? Just an 'Oh yeah, I shot my mom and my dad hung himself because he couldn't take it. He couldn't even look at me at first and then towards the end?' Yeah, he wasn't going to tell her exactly what had happened just yet.
Now thinking about it, Kye could feel his throat constricting and he turned his back towards Addie. "I'm sorry." He mumbled before continuing on their unmarked path and clearing his throat again, desperately trying to rid himself of the lump. Kye was trying so hard to direct her attention elsewhere so he could avoid that dread. He was the listener, not the teller. He felt himself having the start of a minor panic attack so he covered his mouth as he walked. Coming to a stop, he closed his eyes and took long, deep breaths to calm himself down. On the final one, his eyes opened and he turned to Addie. "Can we go back to camp? I can make us a fire and... and we can do mallows.."

Addie regret asking Kye about his parents once she noticed his reaction. She assumed that it was a bit of a sore spot and decided not to ask more questions or say anything really. She knew that he was going to need to be absolutely ready before he could go into detail about what had to be a very tragic event in his life. Was it worse than her's? She wasn't going to compare their pasts by how 'horrible' that they had been since she knew that everything was terrible to the person that it happened to. She never understood that whole 'someone out there has it worse than you do' expression because nobody should be able to disregard the feelings of someone else simply for not coming from a third world country.
She was snapped out of her 'deep' thoughts when he started climbing down from their secret tree spot. How in the hell was she supposed to do that? She almost had a mini panic attack at the thought of having to do it on her own when she felt him start helping her down which she appreciated. He had been pushing her past her limits a lot today so she'd expected him to do the same right now and it was a relief to know that he wasn't going to go that far with it. She would have seriously like died if he had forced her to do that all alone like not even kidding. She would have freaked out, fallen and died. She didn't really want to haunt Kye from the afterlife! "Thanks." She whispered almost affectionately once she was safely on the ground.
She was surprised by how he said that his parents had died.. He sounded so emotionless that she wanted to ask if they'd been bad people. Had they hit him? Or were they just neglectful? She was going to ask him something about it when she thought that she noticed him crying. Was he okay? She knew that he wasn't going to appreciate it but she reached over and gave him a hug when she felt like he had calmed down enough to not scare him. "I know that talking about your parents is going to be really hard for you and it's okay. I'm going to be here whenever you're ready to and I won't judge you or anything for your feelings on it. I know that sometimes all that it takes is to know that you're not alone and I want you to know that you'll never be alone. You will always have me through anything and everything."
He seemed to want to change the subject so she nodded, "Of course we can go back to camp.." She hadn't noticed it before but she was feeling a little chilly now that he mentioned starting a fire. "Yeah! That sounds nice. I'm a little cold anyway." She wasn't expecting some grand gesture like him offering her his jacket or anything. He wasn't that kind of person and she wasn't the type of person who would accept it even if he was. "Hey.. stay for a second and don't freak out." She moved to give him a kiss on his lips, this one was longer than the others but she didn't think that it went past any lines. That, however, wasn't why she wanted him to stay where he was. She was just glad that she wasn't the kind of girl who kept lip gloss and bubble gum in her purse.
"I have a pocketknife." She realized how badly that sounded after it came out and quickly added, "So we can do this." She pulled it out and started to carve 'A+K Forever' into the wood. Most people wouldn't expect her to be the type of person who would carve a heart around it but she just couldn't resist. "Okay.. How does that look?" She hadn't thought that through and now she was sort of worried that he was going to be offended by her 'harming the tree'.

Kye appreciated that she was telling him that he could trust her with anything and everything. He wanted to, and he knew that he could, but he seriously thought that telling her would scare her away. He'd never told anyone apart from the people that already knew and that was just because they were close family. He nodded to her, letting her know that he understood and was listening. He felt kind of bad that she was able to tell him what had happened, yet he wasn't really okay with opening up to her just yet. What kind of friend was he? Not a very good one from what a lot of people said.
He was a little confused when she told him to stay. Was she going to bolt back to the car and leave him there? I mean, he'd be fine if she did.. it wasn't like he hadn't ever had to walk home or hitchhike before because he had many times. It was probably the worst and least safe way of going about things, but he never really cared about his own safety. That was obvious every single time he met up with someone new for a deal or when he went out for a 'midnight stroll' high off his ass.
Kye cocked an eyebrow at her, waiting to see what she had up her sleeve. He stood very still as she approached him and felt like he could vomit from the excitement and warm fuzziness that her kiss brought. Unlike the others, he melting into it and found himself kissing her back. It wasn't just her kissing him or him kissing her, it was the two of them kissing the other. It was mutual and kind of magical and he found himself trailing after her when she pulled away.
He was unsure what she meant when she said that she had a pocket knife. Was she letting him know not to try anything or she was going to stab him? Or was she just desperate for something to say? "Okayy...." He trailed, watching her as she turned and started to dig the blade into the tree. Kye moved so that he was standing behind her and with each etch, his smile grew a little bigger until she was done. "It looks perfect." He said, resting his chin on the top of her head before kissing the back of it. "It's missing one thing though.." He said, borrowing her knife and adding that cliche but adorable arrow to it. Underneath of the heart, he also added a 'N Ever' and then handed back her carving tool.
Kye took her hand, lacing their fingers together and headed back towards their makeshift campsite. He stayed true to his word and started on a fire after finding usable wood and something that would catch which happened to be a dollar bill that he had in his wallet. Money was just material. You couldn't take it with you. It was replaceable and even though he didn't have much anyways, he didn't care to waste it. Once the fire was up and going, Kye retrieved one of the extra blankets that he'd brought and unzipped the front of the tent. He wished he'd borrowed his aunt and uncle's lawn chairs for them to sit on, but he hadn't thought about it until that moment. Quickly, he went on a search and found part of a tree trunk that he struggled to drag back the twenty feet.
"Out lovely seat." Kye said, waving his hand over it like it was gold before laughing. He wrapped the blanket over his shoulders and then pulled Addie in next to him. It was almost dark outside, so to keep her mind off the dangers of the forest, he draped the rest of the blanket on the other side of her and scooted slightly closer. "I brought marshmallows and gram crackers and there's a Hershey's bar in my bag. I'm a fat ass, I know." He joked, tossing frozen acorns in the fire.

Kye's addition of the cliche arrow to the heart and his 'N Ever' made Addie's heart feel like it was going to literally burst out of her chest. How could someone who was usually so emotionless make her feel so many different things? He made her feel like she wasn't going to just fuck everything up for once in her life and she prayed that she made him feel the same. She didn't want anyone to feel like they weren't important like she had before him. He'd made her feel things that she honestly believed only existed in movies and she finally understood why people found silly love quotes so amazing.
She still didn't understand why people said that their crush or partner was perfect though. She didn't think any part of Kye was perfect and that was exactly why she found herself falling for him. He wasn't sitting on a pedestal demanding that everyone meet his impossible standards.. He was real. She could look up to him for his struggles and respect him for not hiding the issues that made him who he was like his drug problem. She wasn't going to allow herself to get into that lifestyle personally but she was willing to accept that he was as long as he didn't allow it to take over who he was entirely and didn't attempt to pressure her into trying because there was less than zero chance that she would ever be willing to get into the very thing that ruined her father's life and would undoubtedly kill him in the end at least if he didn't seek some form of treatment.
Her eyes widened when they got back to the camp sight and she witnessed him catching the dollar bill on fire. Had he really just done that? He could buy a pack of macaroni at the dollar store, one dollar.. One dollar meant a lot when you were the product of a mother who was now very much struggling to make ends meet. There had been a time when money wasn't an issue and they could afford luxuries like her car and such but now those days were gone and apparently not coming back until her stepfather was able to find a decent job again. She didn't comment on his waste of a dollar though - it was his money and his choice to do with it as he pleased. Who was she to stop him?
She was soon distracted by him pointing out the 'seat' that he had gotten for them. "Cozy." She commented with a small laugh. she was being sarcastic at first but she changed her tune pretty quickly when she felt him pull her next to him. Was he just cold or did he want her to be closer to him? The contact brought the warmth back to her cheeks and those damn butterflies back into her stomach. "Awe... Embrace your inner fat ass but if you get too big then I'm not going to help you out of bed." Most people would rush to compliment him about his appearance but she felt like sarcasm was the way to go. She would have made more comments if she wasn't on high alert for wildlife. Could they get killed out here by an animal? She had heard rustling and assumed it was a bear only to see an acorn falling from a tree.. Thank goodness that she hadn't screamed yet!
She reached for his bag to find that chocolate bar (mostly to nibble to calm her nerves) and well she found it but after she found his tin. "Um... Kye... This is going to sound really strange and I don't want you to be angry or anything but I need you to make me a promise." She set his bag back down and started anxiously moving the chocolate bar around in her hand. Why was she so nervous to make a simple request? He had to understand her reasoning behind it! "I need you to promise that you won't do any drugs during our adventure.. I know that I've pushed my limits a lot so far and I appreciate you making me but I'm not ready to be out here a guy high out of his mind." She couldn't handle that yet. She already knew that she would lose her mind completely and have some kind of intense mental breakdown right in front of him.

As Addie went toward his bag, he slouched forward and rested his elbows on his knees. He watched the fire closely, proud that it had taken off so well. the fire must have thought itself rich or something by the bill it had eaten. He laughed to himself at the idea of an inanimate object thinking such a thing. This was nice, he thought. Just the two of them out in the middle of nowhere on God-knows what road or town. It was the same feeling when he snuck out at night and went down to the train tracks or in some secluded part of the subway. Granted, he never thought about the serious danger that he was putting himself in each time he went, but the real question was if he even really cared.
Kye's eyes widened as he heard a little worry in Addie's voice. He felt his heart drop a little when he remembered what exactly was in his bag apart from their sugary-sweet goodies; his weed. He figured that Addie knew about his habit, but he had honestly forgotten that it was in there from the day before. His mouth fell slightly open and he couldn't seem to find words for a second. "I.. uh, that's.." Fuck. We'll, he'd been caught and what really freaked him out was that he felt nervous about it. Normally, he wouldn't have even given a single shit if someone found out, but this was Addie and he wanted to be everything good and deserving for her.
After a moment of his stuttering, he looked to her and nodded, "I promise, Addie." He had a serious expression glued to his face until she came to sit back down. "Besides.." Kye said, letting a little smile slip out, "You're the best high I/..'ve ever known.." He gently bumped his shoulder against hers and poked his stick through the mallow before charring it over the fire. "God dammit." He muttered, looking dissatisfied with the goopy black mess. "Lemme guess, you like yours lightly toasted and golden brown all around." He laughed, wiggling the stick until the burnt ball fell into the fire.

Addie was fully aware of the fact that Kye had an addiction to some drugs and she knew that he more than likely dealt. She'd heard some rumors about that but she just didn't care enough to question him. It was his life, his choices and she had absolutely no right to force him to quit as long as he didn't make her feel pressured to be a part of that. It would be silly to think that she had to approve of every aspect of his life before he could continue it. He'd obviously been doing this longer than she had been in his life. She let out a small sigh when she saw his eyes widen. Was he going to yell at her for even asking that he not partake in such currently illegal things?
She was relieved when he promised that he wouldn't do it. She assumed that was going to be the end of that as she sat down until he smiled. He had a glorious smile, huh? His next comment came out of the blue to her. Did he mean that? "Oh goodness..." She whispered under her breath as the blood rushed to her face. Could he tell that she was blushing pretty hard from that? Who was he to even make her feel like this? He could take those butterflies from her stomach and shove them back into the cold dark place that she felt those feelings belonged. "Oh really now?" She wished that she was one of those girls who had a comeback for these kinds of things. She could say something snappy like how he was becoming a giant cheese ball but that didn't feel appropriate. She liked this side of him and she didn't want him to feel like he had to hide it from her.
"Oh of course... Who likes marshmallows that get all black around all the edges and burns? I want s'mores, not ashes." She teased as she gently reached around to steal the stick from him like the little shit that she was. "I bet that I can toast marshmallows better than you can." She didn't actually know if she could since she'd never done this before. She was apparently very wrong as she watched the little white puff catch on fire and turn into a black charred ball. She pulled it away from the fire and looked at him with both eyebrows raised. "I dare you to eat this."
Well she was just being awfully mature this evening!

"Mm, really." Kye said, laughing and nodding his head. He loved being out here with her, even after their slightly awkward little mishap that had just happened. Beside that, he hadn't been this content in a long, long time. And it was all thanks to her and her brilliant idea to come out here. Even though he wasn't told at first why, he was glad he came. He was glad that he was able to push her limits and make her try to be comfortable with things that she wasn't.
He looked at her burnt sugar puff and laughed at it's pathetic state. He frowned after that when she dared him to eat it. Was it bad to eat ash like that? Was it really any different than smoking a cigarette? I mean, at least it would taste better once he got to the inside, right? Kye bounced his foot as he debated on eating it or not, but he had done things far worse than eating a charred marshmallow. "Mmmmnnnn............ okay." He said quickly as he brought the stick to his face and stuffed the whole lot of the goop in his mouth. "Ahhh, so messy!" He mumbled through it.. or tried to anyway.
It was all over his hands and probably on his face too but wouldn't the world have it that he had nothing to wipe it on except his shirt and he wasn't about to do that so he simply licked it off. "That was.. surprisingly not that bad.." He said, laughing. "Little crispy that's all!" Kye took back the stick once he was sure all of the sticky marshmallow was off his skin, stuffed two on the end and held them close to the fire, but far enough away that they wouldn't catch flame again. When they looked like they were about to goop off the stick, Kye asked her to grab the crackers and he put one on each, them the chocolate and gave one to her. "That's how you make a proper fucking smore if I ever have seen one." He grinned, biting into it.
