Background:
Richard Barney and Madeline Giselle St. James were never the normal couple - they were each born into two of Manhattan's finest families and it was decided that they would be together one day once they were of age, of course. They were sixteen years old when they came to their parents and announced that they were in love and wanted to get married after they mutually finished college. Most parents would be doubtful of this actually working out as they were both young and could easily change completely in the next few years but their parents all but booked a honeymoon for the teenagers.
They were wed when Richard and Madeline were twenty-seven years old. Richard wanted to wait until he had graduated from Harvard Law School so he and Madeline would have one less thing to worry about when they were married. She had gone to medical school but she definitely didn't plan on having to use her expensive medical degree as she wanted to be a housewife who stayed home and cooked. It was fairly easy for Richard to make this happen since he got a job very easily at his father's company while technically it was orginally her grandfather's but he passed it down and it was going to be passed down to the next generation's son when Madeline graced the world with their child.
There was a lot of pressure from the moment that they said 'I do' to try and conceive a son to carry on the family name and take over the law firm. They didn't believe for one second that a daughter could possibly handle it and that was why Madeline wanted to wait as long as they did to have their first child because she knew that there'd be disappointment if their unborn child did not have a penis. She knew that it was going to happen regardless of when they had the child but she wanted to hold off on those awful comments as long as possible. They were thirty-four before she announced that she was expecting a child.
Luckily for them, the baby was revealed to be a boy at their sixteen week doctor's appointment and they were able to breath a sigh of relief at the fact that their child would not be sold on Craigslist. Richard was not a cruel man nor was Madeline an awful uncaring mother to be but they both knew that a daughter would not be immediately accepted into the family like a boy would be. They only planned on having the one child so they really did it up with this pregnancy and his young upbringing. Unfortunately for their plan, they discovered that they were expecting once again when their son was one and a half years old.
