Full Name:
Her full name is Madeleine Ariella Bates- though it’s probably easier to refer to her as Maddy.
Age: Fifteen, turning sixteen on the first of February.
Gender: Female.
Grade: Freshmeat.
Sports/Clubs: Track and field, photography, and drama club.
Appearance:
Framing Madeleine’s heart-shaped face is a headful of honey-blonde hair that cascades over her shoulders loosely and is almost always untamed. Her ocean blue eyes are usually complimented with subtle eyeliner, a quick swipe of mascara, and rarely more than that. Maddy has a rather average height of 5’6 with a proportional weight and her posture is exceptional due to her yoga-instructor mother’s persistent nagging to “Sit up straight or else you’ll get scoliosis, my Madeleine!” She's usually clad in unconventional ('bohemian', as she likes to call it) clothing and boots are a staple in her wardrobe.
Personality:
Maddy is a music junkie; she never leaves home without her obnoxiously bright green earbuds and her best friend, an iPod classic lovingly dubbed Clementine. Music speaks to her in a way that's quite unexplainable; she easily gets lost within the first few seconds of the bass resonating into her ears. Madeleine is commited to being a wholeheartedly loyal, reliable friend- no matter what, she'll be there for you in your time or need. She's like a sponge in the sense that she's always ready to listen and take on other people's problems as her own. Maddy finds it hard to 'fit in' at school but she does take pride in being unique. In her opinion, it's far more important to be your own independant person than to be a clone of somebody else and following society's lead. She's definitely peculiar, what with her eccentric habits and whims, and this puts her pretty low on the totem pole of high school popularity. Being one of the few highschoolers that actually puts effort into their grades certainly doesn't contribute to her social status. She tries not to let people walk all over her, but sometimes it seems like there's nothing she can do but shrug it off and move forward. Another thing that you need to know about Madeleine is that she's sensitive and prone to letting her emotions take over; when she's in a good mood, she can be bubbly and extremely friendly but when she's ticked, she can be stubborn and offensively standoffish to even her closest friends. She's like a ticking bomb; letting everything build up over a long time until she finally explodes in emotion.
Background:
Brendan and Eliza Bates introduced their first daughter Madeleine into the world on a humid February day in Johannesburg, South Africa, adoring and cooing over their lovely little pink-cheeked girl from the very second she was born. 3 year old Wesley, their only other child, was enthralled with his new sibling and it wasn't long before the pair became inseperable.
As the crime rate in their region of the country began to increase steadily, Eliza began to feel anxious and begged her husband to move their family down to her homeplace, a small town on the outskirts of New York. Her husband firmly refused, insisting that the violence would calm down in a moments notice.
Two weeks later, Brendan was mugged and beaten to death on his way to work. His small family was absolutely devastated; Eliza couldn't bear to stay in the country, so she flew to America with Wesley and Madeleine, then only 8 and 5 years old, respectively. They moved in with Eliza's parents and they settled into their new routine of life. The children were raised almost completely by their stuffy, old-fashioned grandmother while their mother began work as a fitness instructor.
Wesley and Maddy missed their father and their home in Africa tremendously. Maddy missed her father singing soothingly, "Oh my darling, oh my darling, oh my darrrling Madeleine!" to the tune of the song 'Clementine' whenever she was feeling upset. Growing up, she turned to music as an outlet and developed a passion for it between tickling the ivories and strumming her grandfather's worn-out acoustic guitar. Music became her life; she still lives and breathes it.
