Name:
Cassidy Jolene Simmons
Age:
Seventeen
Gender:
Female
Sport/Club:
Choir
Grade:
Senior
Appearance:
Cassidy is pretty curvy in certain obvious areas, though other than that she's pretty petite. She's 5'4", last time she checked. Her hair is naturally black and wavy -- she hates going for haircuts because of all the hassle of getting out of her chair and onto the salon chair, so it's grown to be quite long. Her skin is naturally tan and has a sort of glow after she's been in the sun for quite some time. The shape of her eyes remind you of those of a cat, the way they glare when she squints or lowers them.
Personality:
Cassidy is stubbornly independent... meaning, she's entirely insistent on doing things on her own even if she knows in the back of her mind that she needs help. Even when she needs it most, she insists on doing things herself. She wants her independence and feels weak when she has to ask for assistance with anything. The girl's pretty headstrong, and though this can be seen as a weakness, it's also a strength. Cassidy is very strong-willed and determined and she will stop at nothing to get things done. She isn't a quitter. For two years she's been pitied and looked down upon like a child, and she hates being demeaned for the fact that she is unable to walk. She hates being defined by her disability and wants so badly to be treated the way she had been treated when she was able to walk, just as everyone else. Special treatment isn't something she's all too very fond of, for most of her life, she's known to earn things the right way, rather than trying to gain sympathy from anyone. The girl has been headstrong her whole life and she's not just going to stop that mindset now by relying on anybody other than herself.
She gets frustrated easily, most especially with herself. She's a pusher, Cassidy has missed out on so much, she missed out on most of her junior year because her parents had pulled her out of school after the accident -- she just wants her life back, and she's trying to get it. Cassidy isn't one to give up easily, she's had her highest ups and her lowest downs, if she can get through that, she believes she can get through anything and achieve whatever she wants to achieve.
Cassidy is a friendly person in general -- if you're nice to her, she'll be nice to you, unless for whatever reason she has something against you, like say, you're the ex-boyfriend that happened to have been driving the car in the crash that caused her to lose her ability to walk. She gets offended when people insist on helping her, depending on how they approach it -- say, if you ask if she needs help, she'll be completely fine, but if you go out of your way and say, "Let me help you," and help her even when she tells you she doesn't want you to/you don't have to, then she'll get mad.
Background:
Cassidy's life was going pretty well as she was growing up. She had good grades, was cheer captain at her school, had a good number of friends... her life was good. She was just a normal teenager, trying to make sure that she was set to have a perfect future.
Though, nothing is ever really all sunshine and happiness for everyone. When Cassidy began to date Jonathan Russel, nobody approved of it. Not her parents, not her friends, not a single person in her life. Cassidy didn't care, all she wanted was to be with him, which resulted in her having to sneak around with the boy, leaving the house at ungodly hours of the night to spend time with him. It drove her parents crazy.
"You have everything going for you. And you're going to let it fall to shreds because of some boy?"
It was the same thing she heard from them over and over again, and Cassidy really didn't want to listen. She knew she was responsible, she could take care of herself, she was making all her decisions on her own without any influence from Jon at all. She didn't think being with him was causing any disruption until one night, he wanted to run away. Skip town together, abandon their lives. They were in the car at the time of the argument. Cassidy had never been scared of the boy until that night. He was yelling at her, coming up with these crazy ideas, and she just wanted to go back home, she wanted to leave... then came the crash.
The next day she woke up in the hospital, she couldn't feel her legs. There'd been severe damage to her spinal cord, disabling her ability to walk. It was hard on both her and her family. Her parents made her leave school for a couple of years, homeschooling her while they looked for some kind of treatment, any treatment. They spent months and months, trying supplements, home remedies, knowing there was a very slim chance of the girl being able to walk again.
Halfway into junior year, her parents had denied the option multiple times at first, but had finally decided to try out stem cell surgery. It was a last resort. Their final try... and it worked. Cassidy's parents let her get back into school with other kids, though she is still required to use her wheelchair -- she attends physical therapy everyday after classes, and is able to stand up for certain periods of time, but it's still difficult for her to actually walk yet.
