That first day back to school is always weird, especially when you're at a new school. Luke, however, was feeling especially awkward today. Was that her? Lacey Samuels? It had to of been. He'd recognize that body anywhere.. Oh gosh, not again. Here come the feelings!
Everytime he sees her, the old feelings return. Sure they started off as just friends with some amazing benefits, but then the feeling developed, and then it just couldn't keep going on like that. It was something neither of them could really handle, but everytime Lacey was aroound, Luke just couldn't ignore the way she made him feel. It was like all he really wanted to do was run up to her and apologize for everything. Even if she slapped him and went back to never talking to him... It'd be worth it.
Lacey had just walked into the lounge, and Luke was standing at the little counter, waiting for the barista to make his coffee. It was about 1 in the afternoon, but he felt like it was way earlier. He'd only been awake for about thirty minutes anyways.
Abandoning his coffee, Luke walked away from the counter. He didn't really mean to, but his legs just sort of.. went. "Lacey..." Luke said once he reached her side. Then he was at a loss for words. He didn't really have anything to say. Well, he did, but it felt like it was impossible to form those thoughts into words that would actually make sense.

Lacey was already sick and tired of Somerset, and the school year technically hadn't even really started yet. Thanks to all the cheer practices during summer, she'd seen enough of the campus. Not too many people she found herself wanting to associate with. She'd met a share fair of people, some were cool, others she didn't find very worth her time. And honestly, it was just lonely. Not that she'd care to let that bring her down, anyhow.
Making her way into the lounge, she ran a hand through her hair, scanning the room for a moment until she heard a voice say her name. That couldn't be... Lacey refused to move, her eyes glued forward for a while until her curiousness got the best of her and she shifted her gaze towards Luke. She hadn't seen him since she ran away to her dad; then again, her father didn't live very far from where she formerly lived, anyhow -- but in any which case, it had been a long time. Luke was by far the only person she'd ever let her guard down for, the only guy she allowed herself to be with for an allotted amount of time... the reason Lacey never let anybody else into her heart.
It had felt like her heart dropped into her stomach, but she tried her best to maintain a straight face when she looked at him, opening her mouth for a second, unsure of what to say at first, before shaking her head and looking down, "What are you doing here?"

"I..." Luke's mouth hung open, and all he could do was blink at Lacey. "My.. My aunt and uncle sent me here. They.. They said it's the best. So here I am.." He resisted the urge to pull her into a hug, a kiss; Resisted sweeping her away to somewhere no one could see them or find them, where they could be alone and not be bothered, making up for lost time. Again, finding himself at a loss for words, Luke just sat there, his mouth hanging open.
"How.. How have you been?" Wow. That's all you got, Lukas? That's it? "I mean its been so long since I've seen you.. And you.. You look.. Wow." Reaaal smooth, Ryan. Real smooth.

If this were any other person, Lacey would've told Luke to cut the crap -- it couldn't have been that long since they parted ways, could it? But even then, the days that went by since he let her walk out without so much as an attempt to chase after her went on for forever. And Lacey couldn't just push him away again, not when she had him right in front of her at that moment. She let out a sigh, then attempted to smile, "I've been good, I think," she nodded, insistently. Clenching a fist in anxiety, Lacey let out a breath, you think, really?
"Things are better... ish," she scrunched her eyebrows, then shook her head, before smiling, really smiling, when he commented on how she looked. Lacey wanted to say that she missed him, but she couldn't get the words out, almost fearful of the reaction she'd get if she did, even if she knew Luke wouldn't hurt her, not on purpose. And that's why she stuck around him for so long, because he gave her that feeling safety... something she didn't really get with anyone else.
"You, too," she meant it, too. A lot changed in a year, and looking back, they seemed so young, even if they weren't, really.
"I missed you."

"I missed you."
Lacey's words took Luke by surprise. He knew that he'd missed her, but he never thought she did, too. Wouldn't she have reached out to him if she missed him? Then again, Luke never tried to talk to her until now. Seeing her brought the feelings back and they weren't going away. It wasn't the mini heart attack you get when you see someone you like or an ex that goes away after a minute. It was like there was a butterfly party in her stomach, and they weren't stopping anytime soon, thats for sure.
"I missed you too, Lace." Out of habit, he guessed, his hand rached forward and lightly held her hand. However, as soon nas realized what he was doing, he drew his hand back to his side. "I.. Sorry." Luke bit his lip and looked up at Lacey. "I've really missed you," He sighed, finally, after what felt like an hour silence.

Lacey always believed she was too young to know what it felt like to actually want to be with a person, to need them, want them with you all the time. She never liked the idea of being tied down, being somebody else's girlfriend, their property... and, though she still didn't, the idea of that didn't seem to bother her when she was with Luke. Her heart skipped a beat when she felt him touch her hand, only to sigh when he let go. He missed her too. Though a part of her already knew that, Lacey liked hearing it from him.
A part of her wanted to pull him into a hug, but she couldn't do that just yet. Lacey didn't want to let him in that quickly, that easily. She looked at Luke, "Why did you let me leave?" she scrunched her eyebrows, "If you'd just... if..." she looked for the right words to say, "if you didn't want me to leave, you could have stopped me."

Hearing those words, hearing Lacey question him.. It hurt a little, because it reminded him of what he had been through and what they put each other through. He thought about calling her all summer, and he thought about trying to see her every day. But something always held him back. Common sense? Maybe. Fear? Probably.
"Lace," He sighed. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry I didn't do anything about us. I just... I didn't know what we even were. Honestly.. I was scared. I was scared of you rejecting me, I didn't want you to just tell me to leave you alone again. I can't believe it has taken me this long. But seeing you again... It's different than just trying to think of what to do to get you back. I don't know if I exactly had you, but I kinda felt like I did. And I wanted to. I mean.. We can't pretend that we didn't have anything. I don't know what it was exactly, but it was something." He took a breath. It felt good to finally let all this out to Lacey, after so long.
Realizing he'd been looking at the ground the entire time, Luke looked back up to Lacey's eyes. "I'm sorry, Lacey. This is me coming after you. I'm sorry its so late, but I'm here now, and I'm not letting you get away again."

Lacey was a strong girl. Always has been. Luke made her feel like she was on top of the world -- but just as powerful as he made her feel, he had the power to make her feel the weakest. Everything he was saying, mentioning, each and every word brought back all that she felt, and she knew she couldn't just turn him down after all of that, not when she knew in her heart that nobody else could give her that feeling. No matter how badly she got hurt, she knew that she was in fault, too. Lacey had a thing for pushing people away. She pushed her mom away, her sisters, her own family... she didn't want to do that to Luke. Not when he was owning up to everything. She'd met and been with way too many guys completely different from him, and though she never gave them the opportunity to hurt her, she knew what they were capable of, and none of them would apologize in the way he was to her right now. Lacey was smart enough to know that.
Lacey pursed her lips, "I... I've never wanted anybody else like I want you," she took a step towards him, "and that scared me." she tucked a strand of her behind her ear before averting her gaze to meet Luke's, "Because you did have me. And you'll always have me," Lacey let out a breath, "I can't promise you we'll be perfect. That I'll be perfect," she shook her head, "because I've never done this..." she was scared, and the fear reflected on her face.

"I've never wanted anyone like you, either Lacey. You've been on my mind nonstop and I was a fool for not chasing you." Yes, they were young. So young. But love - or whatever this is - doesn't have an age requirement. It was obvious that they wanted each other. You could tell by looking at them. The way that even though the lounge was crowded and there was many conversations going on, they somehow only saw each other and only heard the words from each others lips. Meant to be, you could say.
Finally, Luke felt like Lacey was letting him in. Letting the relationship be something that wasn't just physical. More than the sex, more than the late calls, more than all that.It was finally going to be about them, as a couple.
Wait. Were they a couple?
"Lacey.." Luke began, as he looked into her eyes again. Was this too quick? They'd clearly missed each other, and Luke knew she was all he'd thought about since they last saw each other. It was now or never. He couldn't wait any longer. "I don't want you to be scared. I won't let you go again. I'm keeping you right here -" He took her hand and pulled her closer, then let that hand rest on her hip, "- right here with me, where you belong. Lacey.. Will you be my girlfriend?"

Where I belong? Lacey wanted so much to question everything he was saying, everything that was going on, but this wasn't something she felt she should question. She felt this, she wanted this, and if she let it go now, she was almost sure she'd never get it back. 'Girlfriend' was a word she hated for such a long time, it was a label she never thought she'd give herself -- but all she did was nod and smile, uncontrollably, biting her lip. She couldn't say no, she wouldn't. This felt too right, and when you had something this special, you didn't just let it slip away.
"Yes," she found herself say. This was it. No turning back now, no wrong turns, bad decisions, this was something she wanted to work at. Lacey wrapped her arms around him, "I would love to," her heart was pounding inside of her chest, and she could care less about anybody else in the lounge right now that may be looking at them. She leaned up, and pressed her lips to his in a kiss. Lacey wanted to show everyone that this guy was his, as much as anybody else might not want to believe it. "I promise," she breathed, "I won't run away anymore."
