About My Character:
Full Name:
Eden Doe
Age:
Eighteen // December 25
Gender:
Female
Grade:
Senior
Sports/Clubs:
Mathletes, Student Government
Appearance:
At first glance, Eden is just an ordinary young lady. At second, she is still just an ordinary young lady. It isn't until you finally speak to her that you realize, aha, she isn't after all - she's a young woman who is certainly not ladylike in the least, but she is still ordinary. Maybe too much so. Where others may take comfort to new extreme levels (generic graphic tees and skinny jeans and whatnot) Eden takes it to new heights: she only wears shirts received free at events she has participated in, namely, leadership forums, summer residential programs, volunteering events, etc. But that's not all; the consistency in her choice of pants is even more strictly regulated. Denim, mostly, but on a hot day, she might be persuaded to pull on a pair of cargo shorts. If anything, the only flashy articles of clothing she might have on are multicolored socks that usually don't match. It's a running joke at this point, and friends and acquaintances alike frequently find occasion to buy her socks of all kinds (the crazier the better), and only Eden doesn't find it amusing. Just practical. (Hey, free socks, right?)
But underneath the drab clothing (and often crazy socks)...there isn't much to speak of there, either. As expansive as her brain(power) may happen to be, it resides in a relatively compact frame measuring at five foot three. But she doesn't hit the gym; her one hundred eighteen pounds is just bones and fat and minimal muscle from the occasional (very infrequent) running bout she forces herself to undertake so that she doesn't get too meaty...because that would mean she has to get new clothes. And God forbid if she has to actually buy them.
By this time, you might be paying attention to other things, like her face. Or not, maybe you're still looking at her socks. In any case, the first thing you might notice is that she's Asian. Eastern Asian, actually (it's up to you to guess anything more specific than that). She has dark eyes, bordering on black, and wavy hair that's just as dark. She has no distinctive scars or birthmarks, and no tattoos or piercings. "Ordinary" would size her up just right.
Personality:
Thrifty. If there's a word that can encompass Eden's entire personality (well, maybe not entirely but it would be getting there), it's that. She's thrifty with her words, her actions, her money, her possessions (as shown by her apparel), and especially displays of affection. Or displays of most emotions, rather. Eden doesn't place particular importance on sentimental business, including hugging, kissing, holding hands, or any kind of physical contact at all, truthfully. The one thing she does, however, is smile. She's even known for it among her friends and acquaintances, the way she can express any emotion through one singular facial expression.
Yes, she's thrifty with everything else, but she applies and distributes smiles in a liberal fashion. There's a smile to signify satisfaction, surprise, disinterest, embarrassment, and even disgust, anxiety, fury...and that's just scratching the surface. Eden is a girl of few words and fewer affections, but she has that certain smile for any emotion and all the shades in between.
Maybe that's why she's labeled as harsh. But that would be partly false. The truth is that she outwardly expresses approval of others, enjoyment of others' company, enthusiasm in frolicking and gamboling about with friends only very rarely. Most of what she verbalizes is comprised of thirty percent deadpan remarks, thirty percent critical honesty, fifteen percent rudeness (reserved only for the obnoxious and the unintelligent), fifteen percent strategically vague comments, and only ten percent kindness (excluding artificial kindness, which would probably go into either the strategically vague/rudeness categories). So it's unsurprising that other wouldn't describe her as "kind" anytime soon.
But remember, she sho' do smile a lot. If she likes what you're saying and what you're about, you'll be on the receiving end of her "I'm pleased" face at least once in a while.
And if you ever happen to wonder what she likes specifically, why, you've come to the right place! The list of things Eden likes is easy to remember and understand, because the list is short and uncomplicated, just the way she likes her explanations and most conversations: intelligence, humor - dark or lighthearted, who cares? - and wit, primarily. The last in particular because Eden can't stand dullards, and she'll make it known if you're not to her satisfaction. You could be a felon but if you can make her laugh or say something clever (bonus points for making her laugh by saying something cleverly humorous) and tether her attention to you in a positive way, then you're in fine shape.
But Eden finds common ground most easily with those who can identify with her interest in the sciences and mathematics. Sure, she'll let you lead her in a merry debate on some historically significant event or piece of legislation, but her heart lies closer to the formulas and numbers that can't lie.
Which brings us to a very important bit of information: Eden can't stand deception. Untruths bring out the animal in her, which happens to be a cross between an enraged saltwater crocodile, a box jellyfish, and an elephant. The enraged crocodile is easy to understand: she becomes aggressive and will snap at any little thing that comes her way out of that deceptive cesspit you call a mouth. The box jellyfish is harder to understand, until you google it: poison so potent that it can cause cardiac arrest in humans in less time than it takes them to swim safely back to shore to get help. The elephant? Why, because an elephant never forgets. Eden is a professional at holding grudges.
One might also call her driven, a quality that stems from an obsession with moving forward and avoiding stagnancy. Above all things, Eden fears being trapped and left with no options, being out of control of what is happening around her. While she isn't a "control freak," she is only truly comfortable when secure in the knowledge that she is able to control her own destiny.
Background:
From thirty years past to present, the Doe family has been living strapped for cash - as immigrants with limited education, Eden's parents never had the option of landing cushy jobs. They worked from the twilight hours and juggled multiple jobs just to be able to afford the rent on a tiny trailer, and it was only four years later that they were able to upgrade to a tiny (albeit....less tiny) studio apartment to live in for the next six. During that time, Hana was born - Eden's older sister (of whom she never speaks of these days...). Another six years later, the Doe family was living in a one-story, two bedroom, one bathroom house in a small town, and there, Eden was born.
Eden grew up learning that spotting pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters in the parking lots and in the streets might mean the difference between the Doe family being able to afford dinner and having to wait until breakfast the next morning, or being able to make payment on the phone bill or water bill. She grew up learning how to take good care of her clothes, and how to go barefoot whenever possible to stave off buying new shoes as long as possible. She grew up being happy that she had only grown one inch in a period of half a year, because that meant she could keep on wearing her old clothes instead of having to buy new ones.
Eden learned how to move forward despite all obstacles, how to say no to herself, and how to make do. She learned to value her education, by observing how much her parents toiled to make sure that she and Hana wouldn't have to. She learned how to thrive.
Hana didn't. When Hana decided to leave and play house with a strange man twice her age with no warning, Eden privately swore never to speak to her again, and it was then that Eden learned how to hold grudges. Everlasting grudges.
When Eden's parents decided to leave the memories of the split with their first daughter behind by moving to New York, of course Eden followed, intent on proving she had enough filial piety for two. With the generous financial aid provided, she was able to enroll in the Somerset boarding school in her junior year, mere weeks after the first semester had begun. From there, she proceeded to climb her way to the stars.
Other:
- Eden lives on campus but frequently visits her parents, often stopping by every other day and on the weekends.
- Eden has an older sister who, after deceiving the entire family for almost three years, decided to elope with a man twice her age and move across the country. Eden rarely speaks of her now.
- Eden doesn't have a car; when she needs to go someplace, she either takes mass transit or finds a ride (and always pays generous gas money)
- Eden is a gifted individual in terms of intelligence and intuitiveness when it comes to academia; she has a GPA of 3.92 (un-weighted), a 2360 SAT score, and a 35 on her ACT.
- Eden is a disaster in the fine arts department. She appreciates listening to classical music, but found Art I to be one of the most difficult ordeals she had ever undertaken. (She proceeded to cross out all fine arts classes from her future schedules.)
