Black. Black clothes. Black mood. Dark day ... Dark days. Although some students had found it easy to carry on with their usual ways after the shooting disaster, Alyss was unable to carry on as normal. It just so happened that the two closest friends she'd had at school didn't survive that fateful day, and she had been with them, but yet, here she stood, unharmed. Damien had been her friend, and she never thought for a second that he'd do something like that, but you never know what's going on in someone's mind. Every day since the shooting Alyss had come to the spot in the Quad where it all ended. The last place Damien Knowles and Nolan DeSanto had stood before their bodies crumpled to the floor, lifeless and cold. If Alyss thought about it too much tears sprung to her eyes, but she wasn't about to let anyone see her cry. Crying was reserved for the comfort of her own home, under her bed sheets in the early hours of the morning where no one could see.
Alyss allowed herself an additional minute of silent contemplation before placing a single red rose at her feet and turning quickly on her heel. Though she genuinely did feel sad about the deaths of the shooters she didn't really want people to know she was mourning them, it didn't seem right. Thing was, they were just misfit kids like her ... And she felt for them. With a sigh Alyss sat down heavily on a bench a little way away from the rose that she'd left on the ground, her eyes were fixed on it.
'Why is everything so confusing lately?', she muttered to herself, pulling a bottle of water from her backpack and unscrewing the top, but she wasn't really thirsty, she just needed something to do with her hands. Since the shooting her beautiful long nails had all but vanished with her constant biting at them.

Nate hadn't had anything to do lately. Eli was depressed as ever, if not more what with the shooting and all. Nate wasn't one to feel anything in general, so his gloomy state was nothing new to most. Not that 'most' was really a lot of people anyway. He didn't have too many friends. So today, rather than sitting alone in his dark room, Nate was out in the quad where really no one seemed to be. No one, spare for a girl with a rose. And now the rose was on the ground.. odd. Confused and curious, Nate made his way towards the girl. He'd seen her around, maybe said hello here or there. He didn't remember. But she was pretty, alone and seemed sad. Naturally, Nate had always been drawn to that sort of person. I mean, that's what he was. He liked people like him. "Kinda a gray day to be outside, huh?" he asked, stopping at the side of the bench and pressing his hands into his pockets. The skies were kind of gray today, they looked like they might open up at any minute. He had a hood, though, so he didn't mind. In fact, he loved rain.

Alyss glanced up at Nate, screwing the cap back on to her water, and then she looked up at the sky. It was true, it was a grey day. It matched Alyss's mood perfectly. It actually surprised her than someone even wanted to talk with her, seeing as she looked pretty moody, sat alone on a bench messing around with a water bottle. 'I guess, it's kind of perfect though, given the circumstances, right?', Alyss replied moving over on the bench a little in case her new acquaintance wanted to sit down. Alyss new Nate from around the School, she knew that he was a twin, and she knew that he was the one called Nate, because the other twin had shorter hair and was called Eli. Alyss had always preferred longer hair on guys so she'd always taken more of an interest in Nate, despite never having properly spoken to him.
'I'm Alyss by the way', she added, 'Sorry I seem all moody and emo, sat here alone, but, you know, it's kind of hard not to be', she forced a smile and let her gaze wander back to the rose on the floor.

Nate took her scooting over as a signal to sit. So he did. Nodding at how she was talking about the 'perfect' weather, Nate sort of snorted to agree with her. "I'm Nate," he offered when she gave her own name. "I just try not to think of it," he added, following her gaze to the rose and then back to her eyes. "Didja know someone? I mean.. we all knew them but like.. were you close to someone?" He thought that might be a little invasive, and was prepared to be shot down with a 'why do you care' or 'none of your business'. But he was also prepared to mourn with her. Mourning was easy for Nate. One of the few things he could feel.

Alyss resisted the urge to say; Yeah, I know you're name, at the risk of sounding like a stalker so instead she just smiled and nodded. Alyss also fought the urge to ask him whether Nate was short for Nathaniel which just so happened to be her favorite boy name of all time, but she didn't ask, because she didn't want to be disappointed if it turned out he was just a regular 'Nathan', or perhaps even just a Nate ...
Alyss was a little taken a back by the bluntness of Nate's question. Everyone had been so careful about what they were saying lately, she hadn't expected him to mention the shooting at all. People were acting as if nothing had ever happened, and she hated it. 'Two of my friends died, yeah', Alyss replied trying to keep her voice steady, 'But, I was here kind of, mourning Damien and Nolan, you know?'. Alyss gestured at the rose and then over to a tree directly next to the path, there was still a tiny piece of yellow police tape stuck to it. 'From what I knew of them they were really nice guys, and I know that they did all this stuff, but I have this really strong feeling that they thought it was for a good cause. I mean, they were just misfit kids, I guess I feel sort of connected to them. I had art class with Damien, he was really good ...', Alys trailed off, realizing she was probably talking too much, 'Sorry, I guess I've been just thinking all this stuff, and I'm letting it all come out to you', she let out a weak laugh/sigh, 'It's stupid', she shrugged.
