Derek didn't know what he was feeling. Did he really like Shana... as more than friends? If he did, he couldn't admit it to himself yet. She was his biggest competition in academics! They made fun of each other, she played hard to get, they were like brother and sister... except, not really. They weren't just bonded like family, they were bonded like friends, like really-super-close-good-friends. When he had a bad day, he'd goof around with Shana, just to feel better. And he figured she would talk to him when she was down, too, right? Did she feel the same way? That strong connection, that I-want-to-know-how-far-our-relationship-goes-feeling... did she have it too?
Her hand on his leg seemed to prove that. Her palm was warm against his thigh, and her slender, perfect fingers were somehow pretty. He had never noticed her hands before, dainty and ladylike and very Shoshana-like. When she drew her hand away, he looked at her, and reached out with his own hand, hesitantly. Capturing her fingers in his, he held her hand gently and looked down at their intertwined fingers. "You know, you have really pretty hands," he blurted out, and all of the sudden, he blushed. Dropping her hand gently, he just awkwardly removed his arm from around her shoulders and sat clutching his coffee.

When Derek took Shana's hand in his, it made the young lady beam with joy. She smiled, flattered by his comment. It made her think that too much thought over this feeling she had for, should we say feelings, him was dumb. Shana had to let this flow and take her by surprise.
She was about to comment on his hands but Derek released her hand so quickly. It made her a little upset but she had to understand that this was all new. Obviously, she wasn't the only one thinking as it seemed. "What's wrong, Derek?" Shana asked him softly, leaning forward and tucking her hair behind her ear. Her arms rested on her knees as she tried to look up to his face. "Your hands are pretty, too." she said with a chuckle as she touched his fingers that were holding his coffee cup.
It confused her but she in no way wanted to walk away so soon. They had something going; he was her everything in a way. Shana somehow felt that this could definitely work but only if he wanted it to, too.

Derek smiled when she said his hands were pretty. Back to his snarky old self, he smirked and just took a sip of coffee. "Everything about me is pretty - or, handsome, some might say." He joked, settling back into that 'Derek' mood. He was most comfortable when he could just joke around and pretend like he wasn't feeling something very, very deep for her right at that moment. He needed to take this on his own time and just rushing into it would be a mistake. Homecoming first, anything else after that... right?
"Nothing's wrong," he gave her a reassuring, calm look, then stood up and fixed his coat. He brushed at it as if it had gotten dirty from the bench, but in fact he just needed something to do with his hands. "I'll have to go dig up a suit and see if I fit into it," he laughed and then gave her a little wave. "I'll pick you up from your dorm, tomorrow, okay?"
